Chapter Thirty-Three

“I can’t believe what I’ve just witnessed.”

“The guy’s got friends,” Pierre replied putting the lens caps back on the scope and unloading the rifle. He slipped the rifle back into the canvas gun slip and added, “And not to mention the mother of all luck.”

“Money talks,” Stewart said bitterly. “That journalist bitch has two things that piss me off…”

“Tenacity and guts?” Pierre interjected. “She did a better job than we did!”

Stewart scowled. “No. A sense of entitlement and a rich husband.”

“Well, it seems to work pretty well for her.”

Stewart shook his head. “I just hate wealthy politicians who feather their nest at the expense of the British taxpayer. Her husband has a fucking knighthood, too. Sir fucking Hugo fucking Truscott. Eton, Oxford, The Bullingdon Club of fucking Tory tosspots.”

“But Sir Hugo is Labour…”

“New fucking Labour,” Stewart sneered. “And that makes it fucking worse because he’s a Tory who veered left when he saw how far to the right Labour had gone. He saw the writing on the wall for the Tories and knew that the Labour Party would have a safe couple of terms at least. So, he’s a fair-weather sailor to boot.”

“I have no idea what half those words mean,” Pierre replied. “Can’t you English talk properly. He’s a sailor now?”

“I’m not fucking English, I’m Scottish.” Stewart started packing the mortar back inside the wooden crate. They had returned to Pierre’s safehouse and were taking everything of value and use or that could identify them. They would consider the place compromised. “It means he doesn’t carry on when things get tough. That he’ll change his values to suit the times. Sir Hugo Truscott is the epitome of a Tory who self-serves, is entitled and embedded in the aristocracy, but to further his career he changed just enough to get on the radar of government. He saw that the Conservatives were in for a long spell in opposition and hedged his bets.”

“I didn’t think men in your line of work were supposed to be political,” Pierre observed. “It doesn’t make for impartiality.”

Stewart nodded. “I’m not. Ok, I would like the people to have more and for the NHS to operate effectively and not be constantly on the brink, but I understand matters of defence and security more than most. I can see that all the parties have good and bad points and policies, but I don’t like the extremes. I see far-left socialists as a threat to freedom and the economy, and the recklessness with finances and policies of the far-right as just as dangerous. Historically, Britain has always been a better place with centre-left or centre right governments. That’s when people had more money in their pockets and a better standard of living. Sir Hugo Truscott is dangerous in that he fits the far-right characterisation, but he has embedded himself on the left. A man like that lacks morals and integrity. A man like that can’t be trusted on any level. And when a man like that is in government, then nothing can be discounted.
